Have you ever consider a Self-defense and Assault Prevention workshop for your place of business? Or a personalized, private group session for you and some friends? I have conducted group workshops for a variety of organizations in Bellingham. Some are looking for improved workplace safety, some want assault prevention, and some want alternatives to relying on a firearm.

Possibly you are a parent of a child about to start high school or college. I can design a program to build self-confidence while learning de-escalation skills that will empower teens to stay out of trouble. Possibly you are a parent sending your daughter out of the country for school. I have traveled to areas of Thailand, Japan, Brazil, Panama, Russia and all corners of India. I have learned the hard way what to do and what not to do for my own personal safety. Let my real-world experience be your teacher in keeping safe in a foreign land. Possibly you have a disability and feel that a routine martial arts self-defense program will overlook your special needs.

Over the years I’ve conducted assault prevention workshops for faculty and staff of Western Washington University, and i have been contracted by resident advisers numerous times to teach assault prevention techniques for student residents at Birnam Wood, Buchanan Towers, Nash Hall, Beta Gamma, and Fairhaven Commons.

For 17 years I taught an adaptive martial arts program to adults who are hearing-impaired, blind and have developmental disabilities. The youth I work with every day as a former corrections officer for Juvenile Detention had a variety of hurdles to overcome such as ADHD, bipolar disorder, and depression.

I use the most superior, functional training methods employed in law enforcement to date. I would like to offer my knowledge and on-the-job experience to you. I welcome the opportunity to instruct you in a holistic system that addresses self-defense and, more importantly, its precursor: prevention –the act of not having to engage in combat. I am available to host a 1 1/2 hour defensive tactics and de-escalation workshop for a minimum of 6 participants. I supply all the necessary equipment to safely teach and train at my facility.  Workshops are $50 per person + $25 for a teacher’s assistant.

Note to Business/ Organizations that work with potentially hostile clientele. (Hospitals, group homes, law practices, etc…)

I have traveled throughout the United States and overseas to learn from leaders in the field of personal protection, conflict management, and elite combat sports. Tony Blauer, Paul Vunak, and Frank Shamrock are a few of my instructors and they have been responsible for teaching U.S. Navy Seals, FBI, CIA, DEA, U.S. Army Special Forces, Air Force, Federal Air Marshal Service, Secret Service, Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and several other government agencies.

Over the years I have homogenized the most effective methods from different teachers and developed a simplified formula for assault prevention and self-defense. I teach in a progressive manner so that anyone can learn regardless of gender, size or age. What I teach gives the practitioner the ability to detect, defuse, and defend themselves from harmful situations.

Overall, my assault prevention and workplace self-defense formula gives you:

  • A means of identifying behaviors, events and environmental factors that may trigger emergency protocols;
  • Nonphysical interventions such as de-escalation that can circumvent the need for a hands-on approach; and
  • Physical techniques to effectively and safely restrain hostile & combative people.

More specifics about the Women’s Self-Defense workshop

Approximately 50% of the workshop course is physical and 50% is lecture/discussion oriented. It isn’t entirely technique based; I teach more about Tools, Targets, and Tactics. I address many of the unpleasant realities of common assault situations such as when a man grabs a woman by the hair or when an assailant tries to bring a woman to the ground.

womens-self-defense-2

Much of this course focuses on the prevention of an assault and therefore never having to get physical.

Whichever physical technique is taught, we practice it slowly and safely, gradually building the intensity in a controlled, supervised environment. The methodology I teach is a simple format to remember. It is designed so that it can easily be passed on and shared with other women in your life: daughters, girlfriends, and mothers.

For six years I was a corrections officer and court transporter for juvenile offenders so I have a unique perspective on violent crime, predatory mindset, and the legal ramifications of use of force in self-defense. I also earned state certifications as a Defensive Tactics instructor for law enforcement agencies.

I can customize this workshop directly to any needs you would like addressed. I’ve taught this course to companies, which aids in team building, and I’ve provided it to groups of girlfriends, where it became a confidence booster and bonding experience.

What’s been said about our Women’s Self-Defense workshops:

“It supports and encourages a person’s own common-sense approach while showing simple techniques that build confidence.” – attendee

“We not only had a great time but also learned many skills that could help if ever threatened or unsafe.” – attendee

An ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure.

I found Unbridled Martial Arts (UMA) back in 2008. I had looked at some schools online but right away noticed the high price tag. Not only did the schools want high monthly tuition, they also wanted me to sign an annual contract and buy special uniforms. I was discouraged since I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford all that and also I didn’t know how long I’d be staying in Bellingham. Just as I was losing hope of learning MMA, I came across UMA’s website.
I was surprised to see that there was no annual contract to sign nor were there any other hidden fees. I could join the school on month-to-month basis and train three nights a week. If I wanted to stop training, I was able to do so without getting penalized, unlike other schools and gyms that bind you with their annual contract. With UMA’s affordable and reasonable enrollment structure, I must admit I was skeptical of the quality of classes offered but I decided to take a chance.
There were people of all skill levels and all shapes and sizes attending the class. Rob was very organized with his lesson plan. He explained and demonstrated things carefully at a pace that was very easy to follow even for the beginners. When students paired up to work on drills, Rob went around the room giving pointers and assistance where needed.
I am happy that I discovered Unbridled Martial Arts seven years ago. Rob is still expanding the workouts in new and fun ways. UMA is such a comfortable atmosphere where I never feel intimidated by others or out of place. At UMA, students help each other to succeed and progress together instead of beating each other to get ahead of your classmates.
We all take turns cleaning the mats after class instead of expecting our teacher or a janitor to clean them. When I notice my classmates’ progress and my own improvement in class, I’m reminded that when you invest in yourself, your friends, and in the school, everybody gets better. I feel more confident in myself knowing that I have some self-defense knowledge and skills. I know this is a journey that will never end but I sure am glad that I got my start at UMA.
